Your immune system may be the hardest worker in your body - working
constantly to keep you healthy. It needs rest, especially good
quality sleep. Here are some suggestions to help you sleep better:
A) Try getting a consistent amount
of quality sleep each night. How much sleep each person requires
varies but the average person needs about 7-8 hours per night. Two
good sleep aids are a
white noise sound machine or a
relaxation sound
machine.
B) Try not to oversleep. This
upsets your body's natural rhythm. Try to keep on a regular daily
sleep schedule.
C) Many people benefit greatly by
taking a daily mid-day nap. This does the body good, including your
immune system. try to keep your nap between 15 to 60 minutes.
D) If you have insomnia, avoid
taking drugs or alcohol to induce sleep. Although these substances
may induce a sleep state more quickly and effortlessly, they can be
habit forming and actually result in a lower quality of sleep as
well as contribute top morning 'grogginess' or hangovers. Rather,
consider trying more natural alternatives. The
valerian root herb,
melatonin &
5-htp supplements all work well to help you sleep
naturally. All have minimal (if any) side effects and won't give you
a 'sleeping pill hangover' the next morning.
The
'emotional' immune system.
A) Spend more time outside
communicating with nature. It's a great way to feel
better emotionally, break life's monotony and reduce stress.
Studies show a correlation between emotional well-being and
resistance to illness. Take time everyday to walk outdoors or
just sit outside doing anything.
B) Also take care of your emotions by
trying to keep your feelings in balance - balance is
the key. It's healthiest when you are neither too 'up' or too
'down' all of the time. When you grieve or are saddened for
prolonged periods, your immune system becomes much more
susceptible to illness. Many studies show a correlation with
depression and the frequency and severity of sickness.
Similarly, try not to be too happy and joyful all of the time -
it's simply not natural and your body knows it
Malnourishment
- a surefire way to get sick.
What you eat & drink is extremely important in
regards to your immune system. Malnourished individuals
get sick more often and for a longer duration. Try to eat only
organic, fresh foods and avoid as many processed foods as possible.
Your immune system will know the difference! Here are some more tips
to help strengthen your immune system:
A) Cut back on the sugar! This will
help your white blood cells to kill germs more effectively. Go
'sugar-free' if you can.
B) A good immune system diet
requires a good balance of grains, fruits, veggies & some dairy.
Meat appears to be OK if taken in small quantities. Certain fish
which contain omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon & tuna) appear
helpful. Omega-3 Fatty
Acids can also be consumed as a supplement. Remember, balance is the key! Citrus fruits and broccoli
contain high amounts of vitamin-C which helps prevent colds and flu.
Carrots & yams contain helpful carotenoids, and eating garlic
provides you with a natural antibiotic.
C) Drink plenty of purified or
spring water, up to one gallon per day. It helps flush out toxins.
Our bodies are mostly made up of water, so feed it what it is. A
dehydrated body, including the immune system, is working extra hard
to maintain health. Keep a water bottle handy at all times. For
convenience and to save money, consider purchasing a faucet mount
water purifier, such as one made by
pur or
brita.
Herbal
immunity boosters.
Natural herbal remedies.
There are many
worthwhile natural herbal remedies worth
exploring to help strengthen your immune system or help you recover
from an illness. Most of these have few if any side effects and are much
more inexpensive than drugs. Consider using the following herbs:
A) Daily
garlic extract is a
nice preventative measure to ward off future illness.
B) Both
Goldenseal &
echinacea are two
notable herbal immune strengtheners. Both, but especially echinacea, work very well to fight off and heal colds or flu.
Take at first sign of sickness, and continue use until symptoms
subside. Or take daily as overall support.
C) The
astragalus herb is a natural
antioxidant that protects your liver.
D)Schisandra,
marshmallow, ginseng (American,
Asian or ginseng
tea) all help
your immune system better handle stress, and therefore help resist
infections. Take daily, or as needed.
E) Kelp is a good form of sea plant
to help strengthen immunity.
F)
If you prefer tea, drinking more
green tea may help you produce more immune cells.
You can also take green
tea extract.
H) Consider taking an all-in-one herbal
blend such as ImmunityPlus.

Do anything to reduce stress -
your immune system is VERY aware when your peacefully challenged.
Just do whatever it takes to rest &
relax - the possibilities are endless.
Most experts agree that moderate exercises, such as
walking, biking or swimming do indeed improve immune system
function. Rigorous exercises, however, appear to boost
stress hormones which could hurt your immune functioning. Older
adults benefit the most from immune boosting exercise. Try to
exercise at least 15-30 minutes a day, or 30 to 45 minutes three
times a week.
Some
final thoughts ..
A) If you are overweight,
shed the pounds. Being larger than normal probably means you're not
exercising as much as you should and you might be eating a poor diet
- both of which constantly tax your immune system. Overweight people are also
much more prone to developing heart problems or diabetes, both of
which require stronger immune functioning.
B) Stop smoking. There's virtually nothing good
health-wise you can say about smoking, and I won't start here. If
you smoke, then quit. Your immune system takes a beating from
nicotine. After quitting, allow 1 to 2 months for your immune system
to start recovering.
