 Getting instant relief at home.

The following tips will at least provide temporary relief for hemorrhoids discomfort:

A) Cool your affected area with ice. Take crushed ice and place in a re-sealable plastic bag, wrap with several paper towels and sit on it. Much like ice wraps work for injured limbs, they'll similarly help your hemorrhoid pain by reducing blood flow in the region and numbing the pain. Repeat a few times daily if you so desire.

B) When pain strikes, take a normal, warm bath or soak the affected area in a warm water-soaked towel. Keep from exceeding 15 or 20 minutes at a time.

Other home remedies & household considerations.

A) When you shower, avoid using soap if anal irritation occurs.
Consider using special anal cleansing lotion, however if you do use soap, make sure you rinse well to remove excess soapy residue.

B) Sitting, especially for long periods, may produce discomfort of the affected area. If this is the case, consider the use of a specially shaped hemorrhoid cushion. Also be sure to take plenty of breaks.

 Improve elimination habits.

Here are some simple rules which can help keep hemorrhoids pain to a minimum:

A) When you first feel the need to eliminate stool, GO. The longer you wait, the harder your stool will be. This will put added, unnecessary pressure on your hemorrhoids - thusly creating more pain.

B) Take your time and try not to strain. Bring in some reading material and let nature take its grand old time. Your hemorrhoids will thank you for it afterwards.

C) In some cases, lubricating the inner and outer anus area with Vaseline may promote easier elimination.

D) Get into the habit of using the softest toilet paper you can find (usually, but not always, these are the most expensive but well worth it in this case).

E) When finished with elimination, use warm water to wipe the area or consider using special moistened anal wipes.

 Importance of daily exercise.

If you do not exercise, try to get into the habit of performing daily low impact aerobic activities
, such as walking, biking or swimming. High impact straining exercises, such as weight-lifting, should be avoided. Exercise is a great way to prevent constipation-induced hemorrhoid pain because it helps your whole digestive system process elimination more naturally.

 Prevention via diet & nutrition.

Dietary considerations as a preventative measure.
Yes, what you eat or drink does play an important role in occurrence and severity of hemorrhoids. Please observe the following:

A) Since constipation can make hemorrhoids worse, it's best to eat a diet that helps prevent constipation from occurring. The best way to do this is to eat a high fiber diet. Fruits and vegetables, dried beans, and whole grains are the best way to increase fiber intake. Prune juice works well too. If you prefer taking dietary supplement, see next section below.

B) Cutting back on eating salty foods may work at preventing hemorrhoidal pain by keeping your anus veins from bulging.

C) Drink plenty of purified or spring water all day, up to a gallon a day. Water helps soften stool. Consider a faucet mount water purifier as a cost effective solution, such as one made by brita or pur.

 Some dietary supplements.

In this busy world, it's hard to get the right amount of nutrients via diet alone. If this is the case, all of the following may help your hemorrhoid situation:

A) If you don't get enough fiber in your diet, take a fiber supplement, or something similar such as psyllium.

B) Quercetin appears excellent in reducing the bleeding, itching and discomfort of hemorrhoids.

C) Other supplements worth consuming daily are shark cartilage, vitamin-C and Sulfur.

 A few final thoughts ..

A) Avoid scratching the area.
This may make you feel better momentarily, but you will only prolong and make your condition worse in the long run.

B) Lose weight if you need to, especially if you have chronic hemorrhoids. This keeps gravity from putting more strain on your affected area.
