 Getting quick headache relief.

There are several ways to relieve headache pain within just a few minutes. Here are a few tips:

A) Take a standard painkiller such as aspirin. Avoid overuse - take only as directed on the label. Do not mix and match drugs and try to avoid habit forming prescription painkillers if possible.

B) The supplement camphor may provide quick relief.

B) Quick headache relief may be obtained by applying a ice face mask. Use for 5-10 minutes at a time as needed. A tension headache may benefit from using a heat pack or heat wrap in the same area, or by taking a hot bath.

 Herbal headache remedies.

Some natural herbs & herbal teas have shown great promise for headache relief. Here are some examples:

1) Peppermint tea (or extract), chamomile tea (or extract) & ginger tea (or extract) all can help stress-related headaches by helping calm your system.

2) Scullcap & Valerian (or its tea version), and rosemary tea each may help sedate the mind-body, and gently ease away mild headaches.

3) White Willow Bark eases symptoms of migraines.

4) One herbal blend, MiGone Plus, has been shown to be quite effective.

5) The scents of essential lavender oil, eucalyptus oil or sage oil calms, soothes and provides natural mild pain relief when applied to your neck or your temples.

Finding ways to avoid stress-induced headaches.

Stress and overwork may be the two biggest reasons for having a headache.
Taking the load off can both help cure or prevent headache pain. Here are some tips:

A) Take frequent breaks from your work or project, as long as you feel necessary. A headache is frequently a signal that you've been working too hard. Sometimes just sitting outside for 5 minutes or taking a quick refreshing walk around the block can do wonders.

B) Regular exercise can be a major preventative measure. Being sedentary keeps your body & mind tightly wound, more prone to stress and headaches. Exercising at least every other day is beneficial. Long walks are great since you get twice the benefit - exercise, and the mental benefits of spending time communing with nature. Many headaches are born from tense muscles in the neck and head area. As a prevention measure, try to do gentle neck exercises every morning. The key word here is 'gentle' because being too vigorous may actually cause a headache. Gently roll your neck around or gently move your neck back and forth in each direction about 10-20 times each way. NOTE: Do not exercise to cure an existing headache - it probably won't work.

C) Try to lighten up and don't be so serious. Finding a way to laugh will reduce stress and may make you more likely to forget about your headache. Read a funny book or watch a real funny movie or show. It may do wonders.

D) Keep simplicity in your life. The causes of headaches may be complex or a combination of many things going on in your mind, life, heart & environment. Multi-tasking may trigger a headache, possibly due to the added stress this creates. Try accomplishing only one thing at a time, at a leisurely pace. Over time you will naturally learn to slow your mind-body down and keep headache occurrences to a minimum.

 Surroundings & environment.

Not all headaches are the result of stress or other personal stimuli.
There are things you can do within your surroundings to minimize the chances of having a headache. Here are some tips:

A) If you suspect that your headache may be caused by too much exposure to excessive light, turn off the lights, close your blinds or get out of the sun. Consider buying low wattage light bulbs, colored light bulbs, or lighting candles. Light flicker from fluorescent lights sometimes cause headaches. If you're sensitive to light in general, buy and use good SPF sunglasses when you are outdoors. Finally consider investing in an eye mask, which will block out all light when you are trying to sleep or rest.

B) Sometimes people who work in front of low quality computer monitors complain of headaches after a few hours. Many users who switch from an old-fashioned CRT monitor (those big heavy bulky ones) to a new LCD monitor appear to have a drastic reduction in quantity and severity of headaches.

Sleep - use it to your advantage.

When it comes to headaches, sleeping can be your best friend or worst enemy.
How? Keep the following in mind:

A) In the morning, avoid 'sleeping in' too long, especially if you normally wake up at the same time. 'Sleeping in' upsets your body clock and may actually result in a headache upon awakening.

B) When a headache strikes in mid-day, use it as a cue to take a nap (if you have no obligations such as work). Having a headache is your body's way of telling you something - that is to perhaps get some rest. Sometimes even just a 15 minute nap will do the trick. 30-60 minutes is ideal, but try not to exceed one hour because too long of a nap may actually cause or prolong a headache. If you cannot sleep, just lay down and chill out. Listening to something such as a relaxation nature sound machine can do wonders to calm your body and mind down. It's always a good idea to buy and have on hand an eye mask. This simple device goes over your eyes to block out all light.

C) When taking a nap or resting, a tension or migraine headache can be helped using the cold therapy provided with the Ice Pillo. This special headache pillow wraps around your neck and comes with a removable ice pack.

The effect of food & drink on headaches.

A) Use caffeinated beverages in moderation or only as needed, such as to get a quick boost. Chain drinking caffeine products causes and prolongs headaches in many people. If you suspect this is the case, immediately stop the caffeine intake. A good natural alternative to caffeine is taking American ginseng or Asian ginseng, both of which give you a mental boost with fewer side effects.

B) As with caffeine, use chewing gum only as needed. Try not to chew more than one piece at a time. A constant endless grinding of the jaw muscles can lead to a headache after some time, therefore do not chew gum for an extended period of time. This rule may be valid with candy as well.

C) Don't medicate yourself with alcoholic beverages. Though many people feel their headache dissolve with a drink or two, you will be more likely to have an even worse headache after the alcohol wears off.

D) If you're prone to chronic migraine headaches, avoid or cut back on salt and salty foods as a headache preventative measure. Taking extra daily magnesium, Vitamin B-2, 5-HTP and/or Coenzyme Q10 supplements may also help. Daily Omega-3 Fish Oil also helps chronic migraines, especially for women.

Finally ... is it all in your head?

Have you ever noticed that the more you think about having the headache experience the worse the pain seems to get? Sometimes a headache may be psychological. This may sound easier said than done, but with practice and understanding you may be able to just forget that you have a headache. That's right - stop thinking about it, and the pain may magically shut off! This alternative way of thought is an acquired practice but works well with many people.

Other good alternatives are to learn guided imagery for headaches, meditation or deep breathing techniques. All are actually some of the best things you can do to instantly combat a headache. With practice you can get very good at 'turning off' the headache switch.
