Head Lice (& Hair Nits)

 Immediate attention is vital.

Try to treat head lice immediately.
Not only can it be easily spread throughout the household, lice eggs hatch very fast (in as little as a week). Once hatched baby lice mature to adults within another 10 days. So when you first notice the eggs, do something about it now. You can stay ahead of the game and prevent lice from occurring in the first place, especially if your child is or has been in close contact with other infected children. Do a nit check (lice check) at least once a week.

 Hair & scalp concerns.

Hair and scalp concerns.
The following advice may make identifying and/or killing lice easier:

A) Special head lice combs. Consider a specialty fine toothed lice comb. These combs will not rid living, adult lice. They will however comb away lice eggs, which will help cut down on future outbreaks. Use this comb slowly and thoroughly as needed for several days until the problem subsides. Another type of comb on the market is an electronic lice comb, said to electrocute live lice. Keep in mind that this type of comb will not work to eliminate eggs. Do not share combs with non-infected people unless they have been soaked in water for at least 14 hours (the length of time lice are said to survive in water).

B) If chronic head lice is a problem, consider cutting an infected persons hair shorter. Not only do some studies find long hair to be a bigger breeding ground for lice, but inspection may be more difficult and time consuming when hair is longer.

 Prevent lice with natural oils.
Tea tree oil or lavender oil can be used as a head lice preventative measure. Place a drop of either on a brush and brush into the hair. The scent of these oils are said to keep the pests away. Tea Tree oil shampoo may also be used as a preventative measure.

Can you shower out the lice?

The answer is maybe. The following may be somewhat time consuming and positive results are not guaranteed. But, if money is an issue and you have determination, the following methods may work:

A) Smother and suffocate the living lice (and maybe even the eggs) by using some common house substances and a shower cap. This is a messy but somewhat effective solution. Olive oil, mayonnaise and Vaseline can be used. Rub any of these products into the hair (as you would with shampoo). After showering, place a shower cap over the head and leave on for at least a few hours, or overnight. Afterwards, wash the substances out (you may have to repeat washing a few times if substance residue remains in the hair).

B) Take long repeated showers with heavy use of regular shampoo or better yet, lice shampoo (there are also special lindane shampoos available by prescription - consult with your doctor). This is rather time consuming but inexpensive. Keep in mind that this method appears less effective than others since head lice can keep themselves from 'drowning' for many hours. However, with persistent effort, a few people have found this method to be successful.

 Household considerations.

Along with treatment, spreading head lice throughout the household must be avoided.
Be sure to thoroughly vacuum beds, car seats and everything as often as you can during an outbreak in the household. Consider placing some items (pillows, stuffed animals etc...) in a air-tight sealed bag (such as a space bag) for at least one to two weeks - long enough to suffocate the lice (discard bag afterwards). Clothes worn during the outbreak needs to be washed in hot water, or dry-cleaned. In addition, thoroughly iron the clothes afterwards. Wash all other washable items (see individual washing instructions) in a laundry machine using hot water followed by placing items in a hot clothes dryer.

 Knowledge is key.

Take time to educate yourself about head lice.
The more you know, the less intimidated you are of the creepy crawlers. You will also learn to properly inspect and recognize head lice and not confuse them with other conditions (such as dandruff). There are many good resources on the internet, or consider purchasing a good head lice book.

 Final word ..
If all else fails and you don't have insurance (money) to see a professional, or time is too short, just go ahead and invest in a home head lice treatment kit. These kits include all you need to rid the head lice conveniently in the comfort of your own home. Since treatment must begin quickly consider getting overnight shipping.
