Here are a variety of suggestions to try while you are drinking and
before you fall asleep:
A) Try to pace your drinking to no more than one drink per
hour. Some experienced drinkers will consume a few glasses of water
after their last alcoholic drink and right before bed. In addition
they will eat a slice or two of toast, or other similar food said to
absorb excess alcohol in the stomach. In addition, keep a bottle of
water beside your bed and drink as needed throughout the night to
help re-hydrate yourself by the next morning.
B) Go back and forth between
regular beer and non-alcoholic beer. By having a non-alcoholic beer
every other time keeps you from getting too drunk too soon.
Subconsciously you'll probably still feel satisfied because you are
holding a beer and tasting a beer, yet you are greatly minimizing
the amount of alcohol in your system and also minimizing the chances of having a bad hangover the next morning. Another
variation to this is drinking several regular beers first and
finishing with a few non-alcoholic blends. Experiment!
C) Two good foods known to help
your body get rid of excess alcohol are honey and crackers. These
can be taken before bed (or after awakening). They each contain a
high amount of fructose.
D) Mentally prepare and 'will
yourself' to not have a hangover upon awakening. Before bed just believe and say to
yourself 'I will not have a hangover tomorrow morning.' Get organized
for the next morning before you start drinking -
have your clothes lined up, get some music out and ready to play, or
plan your breakfast beforehand (use your imagination).
E) Overnight, Try to allow at least one or two
more hours of sleep than you normally would need. If you normally
need 7 hours of sleep, be assured your body will need and benefit
from getting at least 8-9
hours to recover after you've been drinking.
I
just woke up and I'm hung-over. What now?
Immediately after awakening, there are many things you can & should
do to begin the hangover recovery process.
Here are a few suggestions:
A) Re-hydrate your body with plenty of liquids and make sure you eat a
decent breakfast, especially if your stomach is relatively empty. Avoid foods with a lot of starch,
animal fats and grease. A greasy sausage in the morning may
psychologically or physically make
your hangover symptoms feel worse! Laying down briefly after eating
breakfast may speed the hangover healing process. Sports drinks, purified or spring water, tomato juice (such as V8),
and other fresh fruit juices are the most effective liquids.
B) Start chewing gum aggressively, but don't
overdo it. By chewing gum fast or chewing several pieces at a time,
you may make your self temporarily more alert by increasing blood
flow around the head and brain area. Obviously do not chew if you have dental
issues. Also avoid chewing for too long - you may tire or make your
jaw muscles more sore, or actually give yourself another headache.
C)
Anyone prone to hangovers knows the benefit of common pain
relievers. Try not to go overboard on
aspirin, ibuprofen etc... - it's
easy to think you need more than is prescribed on the bottle, but
frequently only a small amount will do the trick. Try to avoid
stronger prescribed pain killers as they may be more addictive.
Are
there any natural coffee substitutes?
Many people swear that their
hangover symptoms dissipate by drinking
strong coffee or other caffeinated beverages such as soda. However, use
these drinks in moderation and
with caution since these drinks can actually make a hungover person feel more
jittery. In fact, coffee may actually worsen your hangover symptoms
since it is a diuretic. Instead, consider the following substitutes:
A) Although
green tea (or
extract) naturally
has some caffeine, it also has some wonderful hangover curing
properties, and should be considered a good coffee substitute.
C)Guarana extract
is another 'morning booster.' Keep in mind, however, that
guarana does have a minute amount of caffeine, so it is not
a perfect coffee substitute.

Use herbs to your advantage.
Natural herbal hangover prevention pills have increased in
popularity in recent years. Though these 'combo' pills do work, the
extracts themselves are readily available (& more affordable) when
purchased individually. Let's take a look at some helpful hangover

Milk Thistle extract helps reduce hangovers by helping rid the
liver of alcohol causing toxins.

Chances are, your

potassium

(both are depleted when consuming alcohol).

symptoms upon awakening.

Use water to your advantage.
Water is more beneficial to curing a hangover than
you think (not just by drinking it!). Here we have some common sense tips along with a few
interesting ideas to keep in mind:
A) Taking a good cold shower first
thing in the
morning. Also, taking frequent cold or warm showers (or
baths) any time throughout the day can lift your spirits and help you relax more quickly. If you
have a hot tub or sauna, use it to help your body relax. Relaxing
may help your body tolerate hangover symptoms more effectively.
B) One quick 'picker-upper' is to
fill your bathroom sink with ice and water and keep submerging your
head in and out until you feel better. Do as long as you can stand
it (the longer the better). Warning - this method may be a shock on
the system (partly why it works) so it's not recommended for people
with health problems, such as high blood pressure.
C) Drink plenty of water to
re-hydrate what alcohol takes out of your body. Water is also a
great detoxifier. You cannot have too
much water during these times. NOTE: Drink only purified or spring
water. One good option is to opt for a faucet mount water filtration
system, such as one made by
pur or
brita.
Just
'sleep it off' (if you can).
The next day, consider going back to sleep
(if you have no obligations). A good nap after you've already had breakfast, aspirin, some water etc.... sometimes
speeds the healing process. Just an hour or two back in bed may be what the
doctor ordered. Consider using a natural sleep aid such as a
relaxation sound machine or a
white noise sound machine to help you
get more rest.
This
sound machine produces a gentle whooshing noise that helps block
out intermittent or continuous annoying sounds such as traffic and
ticking clocks so that you can relax and fall asleep easily.
Exercise,
if you can 'will' some motivation.
This may be very difficult, but if
you can overcome your feelings and lack of morning motivation, try to
exercise any way you can. Getting your body to move ultimately energizes your
spirit and mental alertness and possibly helps your body rid excess
alcohol and toxins more quickly. One easy way is to take a good
brisk walk around the block.
Just
give it time.
One of the best remedies is to
just give your hangover time to heal itself. The severity or duration of a hangover varies by
a number of intangibles such as exactly how much, what & how quickly
you drank your alcoholic beverage, the amount of time you slept the
previous night and how much food you mixed in with your drinking.
Generally, your hangover will peak within the first 2 hours after
awakening and steadily improve throughout the day. The average
person will be clear of most hangover symptoms by mid-afternoon to
early evening.
Finally
..
If you have a nasty
headache, try using a
forehead ice pack. Not only may this help your headache but
the coldness might actually help jolt your overall system into
overdrive. If you don't have an ice pack, make one by filling a
re-sealable plastic bag with ice.
