Preventing gout is your best defense.

P
reventative measures to help reduce gout outbreaks. All of the following suggestions may minimize frequency and/or severity of future gout episodes:

A) Don't skimp out when it comes to shoes. The type and quality of your footwear is a very important way to control gout outbreaks. Take your time to find a specialty gout shoe. Or find a shoe that is relatively tight, but one that has more space in the toe area.

B) Exercise your joints but do it gently. Increasing your joints' range of motion and strength are a good preventative measure for gout. Try low impact exercises such as stretching, swimming and slow walks.

C) Bad & good drinks. Alcoholic beverages (especially in the form of beer) greatly increase your chances for developing gout, so it should be kept to a minimum. Alcohol also dehydrates your body, meaning the ratio of water fluid to uric acid is very low. This is why if you currently have gout, alcohol should be completely avoided. On the other hand, drinking plenty of water can help you better cope with or cure gout because it dilutes the uric acid in your body. Keep a bottle of water around you at all times. Consider a cost effective way of refilling your bottle all day with purified water. You can do this by buying a faucet mount water purifier such as one made by pur or brita.

D) If you're overweight you are more prone to have gout. Take steps to lose weight, especially if your 30+ pounds too heavy. When you're lighter your joints will take much less of a pounding. You'll just feel & look better anyway!

 When gout happens ..

A) When a gout attack occurs, keep the joint from moving.
Any extra weight placed on the joint may make the pain worsen. If you can, stay in bed and give the joint plenty of rest. Also make sure the affected joint remains elevated (propped higher than the rest of your body).

B) Using heat or ice to help the gout pain. NOTE: There appears to be some conflicting info regarding the benefits of heat or ice therapy. Use the following advice at your own risk:

1) When pain strikes use ice as your friend. Apply an ice pack or ice wrap to the affected joint, leave on for up to 15 minutes at a time. The joint will temporarily feel soothed & numbed. Use as often as needed.

2) Heat also can work wonders for soothing gout pain. Heat packs or heat wraps can be applied. Other good options are warm foot baths, steam compresses and using a sauna (if available). Always keep your toes warm - consider using extra warm socks especially during the cold months.

 Medications to avoid.

Reduce your chances of getting gout by avoiding certain medications including aspirin, acetaminophen, diuretics and levodopa. Some diuretic blood pressure medications are particularly guilty. However when gout hits, the pain killer ibuprofen works quit well in reducing inflammation.

Supplements & herbs, which work & which do not?
Take caution when taking supplements to help control gout - many vitamins such as niacin and Vitamin A may actually prove harmful by triggering an attack. However, Omega-3 Fish Oil seem to help control gout inflammation (use daily for prevention, or as needed). Also, folic acid appears safe to use to treat gout.

Consider natural herbal remedies for your gout. Some herbal teas have shown some promise. These teas, which should be drank and brewed as usual (as needed), include sarsaparilla tea and peppermint tea (you may also take peppermint extract). Another herb to take for gout relief is chicory root (take daily or as needed).

 Dietary considerations.

Foods to avoid & eat.
Try avoiding foods that produce an excess of uric acid. These include a variety of high protein foods such as lean meat, seafood and poultry (replace protein with fresh fruits, veggies and grains). If it's an organ (such as liver, kidney, brain etc...), avoid it. Also do not eat beans, lentils or peas. Do eat more raw or organic food, vegetables and fresh fruits. Cherries and cherry juice are said to be a good folk remedy. Also add nuts to your diet regimen such as hazelnuts and almonds.

 Knowledge is key.

Understand everything there is to know about gout.
Education itself may be your best preventative measure. Consider the following:

A) Realize and accept that curing this condition will not happen overnight - it takes time. The more knowledge you gain, the quicker your healing will occur. Consider investing in a good book on gout.

B) Because gout runs in family genes, find out about family history and ask your affected relatives how best they have coped with the condition. You'll be rewarded with a wealth of valuable free information.
