 Is stress running you down?

The effects of stress as it relates to energy & fatigue.
Is stress sapping the energy out of you? All of the following may help promote daytime stress reduction:

A) If you feel your fatigue is a result of job stress or overwork, take steps to correct this. Perhaps you can consider changing jobs, or at least taking a well needed vacation. As a temporary solution, consider calling in sick to take a "mental health day."

B) Though stress may be an underlying cause of fatigue in many people, some people may actually benefit by having more of it. Life has become too dull and slow for these individuals and they may need to find a mental outlet to introduce fresh ideas into their daily regimen. Perhaps this means taking on the challenge of a new project, or possibly becoming more involved in community issues or debates. If you suspect this is your case - just get out there and do it.

C) Try to exercise every day, or at least every other day (15-30 minutes or more at a time). This is one of the best things you can do to reduce fatigue-causing stress and boost both mental and physical energy. Keep in mind that exercise is addictive - the toughest part is starting. Once you begin you actually start looking forward to it. Low-impact exercises such as walking work amazingly well. Exercise also helps promote deep sleep, thusly giving you more energy the following day. However, try not to exercise too late in the day - this may hinder your ability to sleep later. NOTE: Exercising too long or overdoing exercise may actually make you feel more tired, at least temporarily. If this is the case, reduce your exercise regimen accordingly.

D) Get enough sleep, making sure you go to sleep around the same time each night. Try to avoid drugs or alcohol before bedtime - both will affect quality of sleep as well as how you feel when you awaken (morning 'grogginess'). If sleeplessness is an issue, consider using the supplement melatonin (3-5mg. 30 min. before bed) or the herb valerian (500+mg. before bedtime) or valerian tea. Both have fewer (if any) side effects than drugs. Most people benefit from about 7-8 hours of sleep per night. In addition, try to get in a good healthy daytime nap. However, try not to over-sleep or over-nap as it can make you more tired.

Diet & nutrition. It really DOES matter.

Let's face it - food is fuel.
Here are some great ideas to help you gain more energy every day:

A) Eat a healthy & well-balanced diet and try to eat your meals at the same time each day. Being nutritionally in rhythm is important. Breakfast is especially beneficial because it helps prevent a mid-day crash.

B) Reduce animal fats and sugar and try to add more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and protein foods. Good foods to have immediately on hand are energy bars and bananas - either of which could provide a quick energy boost.

C) Instead of fewer big meals (which can make you feel sluggish afterwards) consider eating more frequent smaller meals.

D) Drink plenty of fresh fruit juices. Juicing your own fruits and veggies provides the best nutrition. Consider investing in either an affordable juicer or professional juicer.

E) Keep drinking water throughout the day. Try to keep a refillable water bottle around at all times and consider investing in a cost effective faucet mount water filter such as one made by pur or brita. Being properly hydrated is a common sense way to stay better energized.

F) Avoid eating too late in the day because a big late meal may hinder your ability to fall asleep soundly later.

How about supplements. Can they help?

Many supplements are well known for their natural ability to make you generally feel more energized. Strengthening your immune system keeps you from getting sick and worn down, therefore keeping your body life-energized. Here are some helpful supplements:

A) GABA helps you stay vigorous & energetic by naturally helping produce more HGH (human growth hormone).

B) Coenzyme Q10 is another popular supplement that can help boost energy when taken regularly.

C) If your lack of energy is due to having C.F.S (chronic fatigue syndrome), you may benefit from taking a daily dose of acidophilus and/or omega-3 fish oil. Daily use of coconut oil may also benefit CFS by gradually boosting metabolism.

D) Wheat germ oil, Vitamin B-2, Vitamin B-5 and cordyceps sinensis may all help boost athletic performance & exercise-related stamina. In addition, a daily calcium-magnesium supplement may increase muscle energy.

E) Other good supplements to help boost energy include vitamin-C, malic acid, l-carnitine, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B3, vitamin-E, spirulina and iron.

F) A good all-in-one immune system supplement should be beneficial. Two notable all-in-one energy blends are Insta-Energy & Fatigue Fighter.

I depend on caffeine, but are there natural alternatives?
Though caffeine may provide a temporary boost of energy, it is often followed by a crash or feeling of irritability and restlessness. The following herbal extracts and teas can each boost mental and/or physical energy levels without as many side effects:

A) Standard American ginseng or Asian ginseng (both nearly similar/same plant) extract may each be an excellent natural caffeine substitute. These can also be consumed as ginseng tea. Guarana is another herbal boost, but keep in mind it naturally contains a small amount of caffeine.

B) Rhodiola extract may boost athletic endurance.

C) Another herbal remedy which boosts bodily energy is hoodia gordonii. It may speed up metabolism, and thusly also help with weight loss.

D) Olive leaf extract may help those suffering from CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome), or fibromyalgia.

E) One folk remedy with a loyal, strong following is bee pollen (take daily, or as needed for a boost).

Are people in your life dragging you down?

Dealing with people who drain you of your mental energy.
Sometimes the people you live or hang with affect your motivation and energy. Here are a few suggestions:

A) Problems with relationships or other personal issues can drain much energy from a person. Avoiding these problems will not solve anything. Try to confront issues head on, peeling back layers one at a time. Open yourself up and try to just 'talk about it.' Resolution, one way or the other, will help you regain some mental energy.

B) Hang around positive, energetic people. If the people you hang with like to lounge around all of the time, you'll probably pick up their habits. On the other hand, being around upbeat folks also wears off on you. So, try to find a friend to exercise or do fun things with. Perhaps consider writing a personal ad looking for a friend or exercise partner.

Add some light into your life - literally.

Many tired people don't get enough daylight and sunlight in their life. They often close their blinds during the day, or don't spend enough time outside. Sit outside and read a book on your porch, take a good refreshing walk, or if that's too much try investing in sunlight bulbs, which mimic the natural color of sunlight inside your home.

 Pay attention to patterns.

Try keeping a notebook or daily journal jotting down notes about your fatigue.
Note times of day you feel fatigued, as well as which foods you ate or activities you performed beforehand. You may be able to identify the causes or reasons behind your tiredness and make necessary lifestyle adjustments to correct them.

Add some excitement to your life.

Simple boredom could result in a lack of mental energy.
Sometimes life just gets stagnant. What are the things you enjoy but no longer do? Make a list of fun activities that are currently missing in your life and keep adding to this list as you think of them. Keep this list posted some place where you'll always be reminded of it (such as beside your computer monitor or on your refrigerator). When you find yourself just 'lying around' pick an activity and do it.

 Some final thoughts ...

A)
If your symptoms of fatigue are due to depression or physical pain you will most likely want to deal with those conditions first. Please refer to our depression or pain pages for more info.

B) Consider shedding excess pounds, especially if you're overweight. Your body uses much more exertion and tires more quickly when you carry around extra weight. You'll also feel better being thinner which could subconsciously (or consciously) lead to more mental stamina.
