Foods & drinks that may affect dry mouth.

Here is some advice regarding certain foods and drinks that may have an effect on dry mouth:

A) Keep a bottle of purified water on hand at all times. This may provide only temporary relief, but relief nonetheless. And water is great for you - you almost cannot get enough of it. A cheap solution for having a constant supply of purified water is to invest in a faucet mount water purifier such as these ones made by pur or brita. Keep refilling all day long.

B) It only makes sense that dry foods can also cause or worsen dry mouth and therefore make it more difficult to swallow. Therefore it's advised that you drink plenty of fluids (preferably water) when dry food is present. Also look for any way to moisten the food before chewing it. Options include putting margarine on dry breads, or using broth, cream, gravy or other sauces. Use your imagination.

C) Avoid 'drug' beverages, specifically caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Because they are drugs, they do have side effects - one of them being that they contribute to having dry mouth. Sugar drinks and other sugary products should also be used minimally.

D) During dry mouth attacks, your mouth becomes more sensitive to pain. Therefore food seasoning, spicy & salty foods should all be avoided at this time.

Pay attention to your breathing technique.

Try to notice how you are breathing.
If you find yourself breathing through your mouth, you're already more prone to dry mouth. Learning to breath through your nose is a nice preventative measure. With time and practice, this new form of breathing will slowly become more natural and automatic for you.

Saliva substitutes. Are they worth it?

Consider buying a mouth moisturizer (which is a substitute for saliva), or a special dry mouth mouthwash. One notable product is Biotene® (available without a prescription). They also make saliva producing mouthwash, toothpaste, and chewing gum. Another good mouth moisturizer is Thayers Dry Mouth Moisture Spray, while Tom's of Maine also makes a special Dry Mouth Toothpaste. You may also consult with your dentist for similar prescription products.

Is the air in your living quarters too dry?

If your home is too dry, consider getting yourself a good humidifier and use it
, especially to place beside your bed while you are asleep. During sleep many people naturally breath through their mouths which gives the mouth a tendency to dry out. Adding more humidity to the air adds more moisture to each breath of air you inhale. Another way to increase mouth moisture at night is to keep a bottle of water next to you and take sips as needed throughout the night.

What emotions may contribute to having dry mouth?

Find ways to reduce bouts of nervousness, anxiety or being under other stress or duress. These conditions tend to cause a mind-body reaction that reduces saliva production in your mouth.

 Candy lovers are in luck.

If you need immediate dry mouth relief, keep some gum or candy on hand. Sucking on sugar free gum or sugarless hard candy (or even ice chips from your freezer) will help your mouth produce more saliva.

 Effective herbal teas.

If going natural is your cup of tea, your dry mouth is in luck. Saliva production can be increased naturally by drinking the herbal teas ginger, Chinese green and chamomile tea.

 Final word ...

If you are being prescribed certain drugs, Your dry mouth may be a side effect of that medication. Consult with your doctor to determine if this is the case, and if so, alter or change drug treatments or potency.
