Food considerations.
Although food may cause diarrhea, knowing which foods to avoid when
diarrhea occurs can be helpful in your recovery process. Keep the
following suggestions in mind:
A) Diarrhea helps your body become dehydrated so
remember to keep properly hydrated by drinking plenty of liquids,
especially water. Avoid caffeinated, carbonated and alcoholic
beverages - they will all make your symptoms worse. Sports drinks
(such as Gatorade) work well since they replenish badly needed
electrolytes. Also since your digestive system likes warmth, avoid
drinking your beverages cold.
B) To make stools less watery, carrot juice or
ginger ale are both effective. Avoid juices that are laxatives such
as apple juice or prune juice.
C) Avoid strong spicy food or additives.
D) During diarrhea give your digestive system a
break by avoiding solid foods.
E) Artificially sweetened foods that use sorbitol
or mannitol should be avoided due to their laxative effect. These
include many gums and candy. Check the ingredients.
F) Greasy foods are a no-no during diarrhea.
G) As your diarrhea improves, gradually start
eating more solid foods, also eat more potatoes, white bread and
crackers, bananas and rice, and soups that are clear.
Effects
of stress on the gastrointestinal system.
Sometimes stress may help induce diarrhea
or make symptoms worse. Find any way to relax and slow
your body down. Meditation works well, or consider lighting
candles
or incense, playing soft music, reading a book, sitting outside in
the sun, or laying down and listening to a
relaxation sound machine
or white noise sound machine.
Rest
is key.
Diarrhea symptoms can be reduced
by getting off your feet and lying in bed for the duration of the
condition. Just lying in bed and
resting helps your body fight diarrhea more effectively. If you have
abdominal cramps, placing a heating pad on your belly may help.
Are
there any dietary supplements that can help?
Supplements can help provide
relief when diarrhea sets in.
Take any of the following as needed:
B) For moderate to severe
cases of diarrhea, consider the use of
camphor.
B) Chronic diarrhea
can be helped by taking folic acid on a daily basis. Daily
acidophilus or
bifidophilus may also be a good preventative measure.
C) Potassium is lost during
bouts of diarrhea, so
taking a potassium supplement may be beneficial during this time and
afterwards for a few days to prevent recurrence.
D) The mineral
MSM
helps soothe the intestines and digestive system.
F) During episodes of diarrhea,
STOP taking magnesium or excessive
vitamin-C - wait a few days before resuming.

Sometimes
it's just best to let nature take its course.
Sometimes it's best just to 'wait
it out.' Like a storm, diarrhea usually corrects itself over time.
Rarely does common diarrhea last more than 12 hours. If you've
already suffered for several hours, the worst may already be over. Try to
avoid standard diarrhea medication if it's at all possible - you may
suffer side effects for long after your condition has corrected itself. Give
it time and it'll soon be over. If your diarrhea lasts more than a
few days, you may have an underlying condition and it may be time to
seek professional help.
Final
thought ...
For chronic diarrhea, keep a notebook.
You may be able to identify certain foods that consistently trigger
diarrhea. Try an 'elimination diet,' gradually eliminating one food
at a time to specifically determine which food is the culprit.
Eliminate those foods from your diet regimen.
