Your diet is a very important
part of keeping your diabetes from worsening. Here we'll look at
general dietary guidelines as well as good and bad foods:
A) Keep it low calorie if you are overweight. Most
diabetes patients tend to be overweight and thusly, diabetic
problems tend to increase with extra weight.
B) Keep your fat intake low while eating more
natural or organic foods. This means a reduction in animal fats, egg
yolks and dairy products.
C) Eat regularly. This means breakfast, lunch and
dinner at the same time each day, and near the same quantities. Your
body works like clockwork and a regular schedule reduces bodily
stress thusly helping it regulate sugars better.
D) Replace standard cooking oils with extra virgin
olive oil. In addition to lowering blood sugar levels, olive oil is
well documented as being better for your heart, as well as tastier
than standard cooking oils (such as coconut and vegetable oils).
E) Cut down drastically on salt. Salt is believed
to raise blood pressure, and hypertension is a known side effect of
having diabetes. Substitute an herbal or other natural
salt
substitute. If you simply cannot live without salt, try to go with a
reduced salt product.
F) Use herbal seasonings to your benefit.
Cinnamon seasoning and turmeric seasoning may help diabetic
patients.
Herbal
support for diabetes.
Diabetes is obviously a serious
disease and most people rely on standard medication to treat &
control diabetes (as they should). Natural herbal remedies, however,
should not be overlooked for great nutritional support. Most herbal
extracts (& teas) are inexpensive & quite safe with minimal (if any)
side effects. Diabetics should consider adding any of the following
into their daily regimen:
A)Gymnema herbal extract &
blueberry leaf tea
each may
help lower blood sugar levels in type-2 diabetics (take as needed).
Meanwhile, ginseng (American,
Asian &
Ginseng Tea) all help
balance blood glucose levels for type-2 diabetics. (NOTE:
Gymnema may also
help raise insulin levels in type-1 diabetics).
B)Fenugreek extract (and
tea) helps diabetics
better manage glucose levels, and may assist in reducing unhealthy
cholesterol counts (take daily).
C)
To improve circulation associated with diabetes, take a daily dose
of gotu kola extract.
Drinking
red clover tea (or
taking the extract) may
also help increase circulation (take or drink daily or as needed).
NOTE: All the above mentioned herbs are support for diabetes, and not meant as a
replacement for standard medication.

Importance
of regular exercise.
Exercise, in moderation, can be
extremely beneficial in controlling diabetes. Especially with this
condition, you should consult with your doctor before starting a
regular exercise program, especially if it involves intense or high
impact activities. Mild weight training and/or daily walks can help
regulate insulin resistance or insulin sensitivity problems. these
activities
will just make you feel better in mind, body and spirit anyways. Since
diabetes is sometimes associated with foot problems, any exercise
that can cause foot injury should be considered unsafe. Low impact
walking, biking and swimming appear to be good exercise choices for
diabetic patients.
Lose
weight, lessen diabetic symptoms.
If you're overweight, your body is probably working harder to fight
off diabetes problems. Losing weight,
especially around the belly area, may help reduce insulin related
problems. The fact is that most people who have this disease are
overweight, so if you have a family history of diabetes (and you
have yet to develop it) it's probably a good idea to lose weight.
Consider a special diabetes exercise program.
Let's
discuss shoes & socks.
Never underestimate the importance of
buying good shoes or socks, especially if you have
diabetes related foot problems. Good shoes and socks may also be a
preventative measure for future problems. Consider special
diabetes
socks or browse a selection of
diabetes shoes. Specialty shoes and
socks help prevent blisters or sores from developing on your feet.
Diabetes
and oral health.
Keep your oral health in
check. Diabetes makes fighting off infections more difficult, and not
brushing or flossing regularly can lead to an array of tooth and gum
problems, including periodontal disease and decaying teeth. Replace your
toothbrush often (at least every few months) and always remember to brush
and floss every morning, night and after each meal. Also be sure to regularly
see your dentist.
Folk
remedies for your bath.
Use your bath to your
advantage. There are many proven folk remedies that utilize your bath time
to your diabetic advantage, and a good bath just makes you feel better
anyway. For leg muscle cramps, one cup of apple cider vinegar added to
your warm bath water may do wonders. If your diabetes has caused dryness
or itchy skin, just add in one cup of regular table salt to your bath
water to help soften your skin. Circulation can be increased if you can
tolerate a cold water bath.
Diabetes
is SO serious, so try to have FUN!
Diabetes can be quite taxing
on your mental attitude and spirit, but don't allow it to rule your life.
Not lamenting on it for even a little while might do you some good. Just
get out there and do something - things you used to do and enjoy before
diabetes developed. Make and keep updating a list of things or places you'd
like to visit or do. Post this list in a prominent place where you can be
reminded of it daily. When you're feeling down or need a
lift, refer to the list and have some fun.
Some
final thoughts ...
A) Educate yourself about
diabetes. The more you're in the know about this complex condition, the
better you'll be able to handle the pitfalls associated with diabetes. Do
research over the net (this page is a good starting point) or educate
yourself by getting a good
book on diabetes.
B) Don't smoke or if you do,
quit! Nothing good can come out of smoking for an existing diabetic
patient (or for anybody). When you smoke your kidney, heart and whole body
are at an elevated risk for complications. If you're a smoker and not yet
diabetic, your risks for acquiring this disease increase dramatically.
C) Finally, find out if you
are eligible to receive
free diabetic supplies. If you have a medical insurance plan, you
may qualify.
