All of the following
represent a good start to ease you out of depression:
1) Start making a list of things you enjoy doing (or you once did)
and save them to a computer or handheld device. Then print & post them
somewhere that they'll be seen every day. Having this list is a
constant reminder to do something when you feel 'down in the dumps.'
2) Stay busy. Always try to keep your mind occupied. Lying around
feeling sorry for yourself will not solve anything. Breaking out of
a rut means incorporating new thoughts into your life. 99% of the
thoughts we have today, we will carry over into tomorrow. Why not
replace the old way of thinking with new positive ones. Slowly, over
the course of weeks and months, you'll rid yourself of negative
thought patterns.
3) Stop being so self-absorbed and focus your attention on other people.
Self-loathing only helps remind yourself of how miserable you are.
By focusing on others (or even your pet) you'll naturally feel more
'open' and not 'closed.' And best of all you'll get more love in
return. By keeping your depression a secret not only hurts yourself
but it's also not fair to others in your life who may be confused by
your behavior. Talking about your feelings is extremely therapeutic
and is also a good step towards recovery. In addition, you'll be
surprised how understanding others are, and how willing they'll be
to help you overcome depression. Another good way is to join a
discussion group or other online forum where you can anonymously
discuss depression with other sufferers.
4) Listen or watch recordings or shows from great life coaches such as Wayne Dyer.
These will help you find meaning in life, help you seek forgiveness
in others and increase your self-worth. Dyer can frequently be seen on PBS television shows
teaching spirituality and life motivation. Another well known
motivational speaker is
Anthony Robbins. In addition to his
products, his official website also offers a free online health assessment.
Things
to avoid when you are depressed.
Try reducing any
of the following, all of which may give you temporary comfort but
may be followed by deeper depressive symptoms:
1) Keep
compulsive shopping to a minimum. When down, many
depressed people go shopping only to regret it later. This is
especially a problem if part of your depression is related to
financial difficulties. If you must comfort yourself, consider
treating yourself with a hot bath, hot tub, Jacuzzi or even a sauna.
2) As with
above, try to avoid compulsive eating binges. While some
people react to depression by not eating, others will eat out of
instantaneous comfort. Gaining weight or getting fat makes you feel
worse about yourself and that's the last thing you need when you're
already battling depression. If food is a problem, try eating more
frequent smaller meals rather than fewer big meals.
3) Try reducing your intake of caffeinated
beverages,
especially if your depression also comes with anxiety. Both alcohol and caffeine
give you a short 'rush,' may contribute to mood swings, and can be
quickly followed by a low mood period. Caffeine may also contribute to sleeplessness.
St.
John's Wort & other natural herbs for depression.
Consider the use of an
herbal remedy to combat your
depression. Here are some herbs to keep in mind:
A)
One notable herb proven to work for mild to moderate depression is
St. John's Wort. This herb has few,
if any, side effects, and to work effectively it should be taken in relatively high doses
(perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 mg./day). Allow 4 to 8 weeks to begin
noticing any effects.
C)Oatstraw tea can be drank as
needed to help reduce depression-induced feelings of exhaustion.
D)
Kava kava. This is a
powerful herb, well documented for its ability to create temporary bliss &
a sense of well-being. Kava, however, is only short-term relief, lasting
for a few hours.
E)Pumpkin seed oil,
when taken in higher dosages, may act as a preventative
measure (not a treatment).
Swanson St. John's Wort

emotional wellness. Well documented to cure mild depression,
when taken regularly (allow 1-2 months to see results). Pure natural whole herb for

In
addition to dietary considerations (see below), you can also use
supplements to combat depression. Take the following into
consideration:
C)Magnesium
& 5-htp
could be be taken to help your brain produce more serotonin (known
to help improve mood). In
addition 5-htp may help depression-related insomnia.
E) One supplement gaining in popularity for depression is
SAM-e.
D) The
amino acid
L-Tyrosine (up to 3,000mg. a day)
increases another mood enhancing brain chemical - norepinephrine.
A)
If you dislike or can't eat fish, you can substitute
omega-3 fish oil supplements
which is well known as a good 'brain tonic.'.
B) Increase your intake of B
vitamins, especially
folic acid, vitamin
B-12
and B-6.
F) Older adults & the
elderly with mild depression may benefit by taking
DHEA on a daily basis.

good nutritional support for depression.

Know which foods may help
prevent or treat depression. The
intake of omega-3 fatty acids (found in most cold water seafood)
should be increased (Omega 3 Fish Oil
may be taken in supplement form if you do not like to eat fish- see on right). Salmon, sardines and anchovies are good sources
for omega-3. Also increase your consumption of magnesium rich foods,
which is needed to help serotonin production (the brain chemical
known to promote good mood). Food sources of magnesium include nuts
and whole grains, green vegetables and legumes.
Best Value We Found.
Natrol Omega-3
Promotes
a healthy cardiovascular system. The perfect brain food for
cognitive function. Taken long-term, may help prevent or

Limit your intake of alcohol.
Drinking may make you more depressed or give you momentary
happiness, but alcohol also ultimately wears you down and depletes your body of needed
nutrition. If you do 'need' to drink, avoid drinking on consecutive
days - it will only further your depression. You may spiral into an
addictive drinking cycle where you feel you can't cope without it.
Exercise
the demons.
Consider
exercising on a regular basis. Exercise decreases stress while it also produces
natural chemicals in the brain which may promote overall
well-being. Aerobic exercises such as jogging or brisk walks appear
to work well, as do strenuous activities such as weight lifting. As
always consult a professional before beginning a serious exercise
program.
Crying.
Don't be
afraid to cry. Crying can be a great release emotionally and physically. Some
people call the effect of crying as 'an orgasm of the emotions.'
Educate
yourself about depression. Knowledge is key.
Do research on the
internet or go buy a good depression book. The more you know
about depression, the more you may understand that having this
condition is NOT a life sentence. You're not stuck with depression
forever. Many people have totally overcome depression and live very
happy lives today. But also be realistic and know you will not
become better overnight - allow at least a few months for realistic
recovery.
