Improving Project Concentration

Preparing in advance for your project.

A) On the night before your project be sure to try to get an ample amount of sleep. Don't drink alcohol the night before and don't induce sleep with sleeping pills (you will wake up in a haze the next day). If you have insomnia or feel like you need a good night of sleep, try a supplement such as melatonin, up to 5mg right before sleep. Another safe alternative to sleeping pills is the Valerian root herb - taken at bed time, it can help induce sleep with little or no side effects. 5-HTP is another natural alternative worthy of consideration.

B) On the day that your concentration needs to be at full throttle, it's important that you don't skip breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's especially important that you have a good hearty, balanced breakfast. It fully charges your battery and also sets the tone for the rest of the day.

C) Drink plenty of water all day before starting work and keep and later keep bottle of water within reach while you work. Water is just pure energy - nothing bad can be said about it.

D) Know from your own personal experience what time of day your mind is normally at peak function. Do your work at this time. Some people work best in the morning before the days activities compound to wear them down mentally.

E) Earlier in the day (before beginning your work session), assemble and organize all the materials you need for your project. This will keep you from getting distracted in the middle of your project resulting in your concentration being interrupted.

F) If being focused is a large part of your life, consider taking appropriate daily dietary supplements. Omega-3 Fish Oil is one such supplement- well known to improve overall concentration when taken regularly. Another is DMAE, well known to improve attention span (allow up to 3 weeks to notice any effects). NOTE: Herbal extracts are also well known for their 'brain tonic.' Scroll down for helpful concentration herbs.

Just before beginning your project ...

A)
Before starting a project where strong concentration is needed, go outside and take a good brisk walk - 15 minutes is OK, 30 minutes good & 45 minutes optimal. A walk in nature may bring surprising inspiration and you will come back calm and full of creative mental energy.

B) If complete quiet makes you work best, disconnect or turn off any possible distractions. This includes turning off your telephone ringer, TV or radio. If you love surfing the internet, also turn off your computer to eliminate any such temptation.

C) Consider setting a realistic yet firm time table to get your job done (2 or 3 hours for example). This will keep you motivated and also keep your mind from wandering. You will be thankful for this after the project is finished. NOTE: Being unrealistic (not allowing enough time) may only make you frustrated, mad and wanting to quit. Allowing too much time may make you lazy.

D) Do not eat a meal right before starting your work - being 'full' may make you feel temporarily sluggish. Instead let any food process at least 1 to 2 hours before beginning your project.

E) Take an herbal concentration booster ... many really do work (scroll down below).

 While you are working ...

A) For long projects be sure to take several short breaks - you'll be thankful for it later. Find a good place to stop, perhaps between lessons or segments or after some accomplishment has been achieved. Go stretch, sit outside for a few minutes, or take a good healthy walk around the block. Some people benefit from taking a really short "power nap" of less than 30 minutes (napping for too long is not recommended for this purpose). When taking a break or to eat, make sure you step away from this space and return only when you're ready to re-start work.

B) Try not to munch on snacks while working. Aside from making your fingers sticky or oily, it might be a distraction or make your tummy feel full (causing sluggishness).

C) Abstain from drinking caffeinated beverages or sweets during work. These may give you a sugar rush, possibly causing your mind to race or to wander off.

 Creating a nice working 'ambience.'

A) Create a space in your home specifically designed for higher concentration work.
This means creating a work area that promotes productivity - make sure the area is free of clutter, excess noises and distractions. Use it ONLY for work.

B) Though some may work best in total quiet, other people may work best with good room ambience. This may include soft ambient lighting, candles and/or incense burning, or quiet music playing in the background (preferably new age, classical or nature sound CD's). Some people may benefit using a white noise machine or relaxation sound machine. Experiment and find out what makes you concentrate the best.

C) Pay more money to find good, quality ergonomic office furniture. Extra comfort will most likely result in better concentration which in return results in higher quality work, especially for those people who spend a lot of time in their work space. A nice comfortable ergonomic chair is especially important. If you work on your PC consider investing in a good gel or memory foam mousepad (for wrist support).

D) Keep your environment at just the right temperature for you. If your home is too hot or too cold (and you're not allowed to change that), consider closing the door and using a personal room heater or small low-noise fan to use in your work space.

 Social & household considerations.

A)
If there are other people in the house make sure they know your need not to be distracted. It is important that they obey and respect you.

B) If you have pets, consider feeding them a big meal before your project starts. Animals generally feel drowsy and sleepy after a big meal.

C) Now let's talk about significant others in your home. If you are madly in love with someone (or having domestic disputes), avoid spending quality time with that 'significant other' until after you have finished your project. Socializing in the middle of your project is one sure way to break your concentration.

D) Finally, if it's too noisy in your house (and you know that there's nothing you can do about it), find a quiet place to work such as a library or going to a park. Or you can consider investing in good ear plugs or noise canceling headphones.

Herbal concentration boosters. Yes they can work!
Consider using an herbal remedy. Keep the following in mind:

A) Ginkgo Biloba & Bacopa Monniera are both well known for their ability to improve concentration (take daily or as needed).

B) Short-term concentration can be improved by taking rhodiola right before starting your project.

C) Also, Ginseng (American, Asian or Ginseng Tea) may help sharpen your concentration & memory.

D) Guarana may also be effective but this extract contains a small amount of caffeine, so be forewarned.

E) Peppermint oil & lavender essential oil both may improve concentration when inhaled as aromatherapy.

F) There are several all-in-one herbal blends which combine several natural plant compounds to improve concentration. Two such products are StudyPlus which helps improve focus, concentration & memory, and Brain Pep, an herbal blend that also combines other key supplements.
