Preventative measures.
Consider the following to help stop cold sore outbreaks:
A) Find a way to relax.
Studies show a correlation between stress and having a cold sore
attack.
B) Take simple steps to
speed up your metabolism. If you're
'run down' your body is less able to fight off the virus and you'll be
more susceptible to catching a cold or flu, which can bring on cold
sores. Regular exercise and good quality sleep will help.
C) Keep sunlight exposure
to the lip area at a minimum - the
sun can trigger a bad cold sore. If in the sun, always use a
good lip
balm that contains a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF.
When
an outbreak occurs ...
When you have a cold sore, here are some remedies you can do at home:
A)
If a blister has not occurred you can apply ice directly on the cold
sore. Apply for 10 minutes at a time as frequently as you're able. Ice
will numb the area and possibly prevent the cold sore from worsening.
NOTE: If a blister has already developed ice will 'only' make it feel better,
however it may cause the sore to heal more slowly.
B)
Keep from touching the cold sore, especially if it's in the blister
stage. Your virus could spread to other parts of your lips or even
your face.
C)
Apply Vaseline to keep the cold sore from drying or cracking.
D)
Early in the outbreak (first few days) use common salt. With a
moistened finger, press the finger on the salt and then apply on your
virus for 30 seconds at a time. Do this twice a day.
Good
& bad foods.
Watch the
foods you consume. They
really can make a difference in severity or duration of your cold sore outbreak.
FOODS TO AVOID:
Foods rich in arginine promote the cold sore virus.
These foods include many nuts and seeds such as peanuts and almonds.
Arginine is also found in chocolate, peas, oatmeal along with any
wheat product.
Coffee, alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
FOODS THAT MAY
HELP:
Unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables & those
with whole grains.
Those that are high in L-lysine which is an amino acid
found in many vegetables, turkey, chicken and fish.
Getting
help by using dietary supplements.
Here are some vitamins
that may help your cold sores. Use any
of the following
supplements along with a healthy diet as outlined above:
A)
Take the amino acid
L-Lysine for the duration of the
outbreak. Use only as needed - long term use of lysine may lower your immune system's ability to fight off future attacks.
B) Liquid Vitamin-E. Apply
liquid or cream directly on the cold sore (use as needed).
C)
Duration and quantity of cold sores can be reduced by using
Vitamin-C
along with
bioflavonoids
(take as needed).
D) Acidophilus. Take with milk
several times per day during an outbreak.
E)
Vitamin
B-Complex or vitamin
B-12. Actually most B vitamins are good
at defending against cold sores. Take daily.

E)
