Adjust the way you
eat, prepare or cook meals.
Take the following into consideration:
A)
Grill and roast meats rather than frying them. B) Steam fish. C) Boil or steam vegetables. D) If you eat poultry, remove the skin. E) Eat more frequent smaller meals rather than fewer huge meals.
What
are some cholesterol-friendly foods?
Identify and increase consumption of cholesterol friendly foods,
or consider becoming a vegetarian. Good foods for cholesterol
include the following:
A)
Foods high in fiber. Increase intake of oats, beans, fruit pectin,
psyllium seed, flaxseed and glucomannan.
B)
Whole grains.
C)
Fruits and vegetables, especially garlic, or other foods containing complex
carbohydrates. These include pasta, bread, cereals, rice and potatoes.
D)
Fermented milk products such as acidophilus milk, yogurt & kefir.
Select 'non-fat' versions.
E)
Soybeans. Soy is said to
reduce LDL cholesterol.
F)
Walnuts and almonds.
G)
Fish containing omega-3 fatty acids, including herring, mackerel,
salmon, tuna & sardines.
So
which foods should I stay away from?
Know which foods to avoid.
These foods and ingredients are well known to elevate cholesterol:
A)
Animal meat in general. Most contain saturated fat. Dark meat and
poultry skins are especially bad.
B)
Dairy products not labeled as "fat free." These include cheese, ice
cream, margarine and butter.
C)
Fried foods, especially those cooked in palm oil or coconut oil. If
you must use oil, consider using extra virgin olive oil (however olive oil should
not be used in a deep fryer). Olive oil lowers LDL cholesterol and can
be found in virtually all supermarkets.
D)
Egg yokes (yellow part of the egg). If possible use only egg whites.
NOTE: There has been some conflicting studies recently suggesting that
egg yokes may not be as bad for cholesterol as earlier feared. Until
further study, use minimally with caution.
E)
Fast food. Very few items in fast food restaurants promote healthy
cholesterol levels so it's just a good idea to avoid them completely.
F)
Chips & crackers. If you must, choose a 'baked' version.
G)
Chocolate and sweets.
What
about dietary supplements?
Along with food,
dietary supplements have shown
great promise. You may want to add any of the following
to your diet regimen:
A)
Omega-3 Fish Oil
and/or cod liver oil
both appear to help overall cholesterol levels (HDL & LDL). Take
each regularly, even if just to maintain already healthy cholesterol
levels.
B) Fiber supplements.
These are excellent to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. One such
fiber is
