Taking care of office concerns & home ergonomics.

Consider improving office or home ergonomics.
The following may help:

A) Buy an ergonomic pen. For C.T.S. this generally means using a pen with a bigger than normal shaft and a soft grip. Consider using medium point pens - these produce more ink and may subconsciously keep you from pressing down so hard on the paper.

B) Improve your sitting posture making sure your shoulders don't roll forward too much. Consider buying a good ergonomic chair and higher quality office furniture in general.

C) Keep your area warm and comfortable. Cold environments are known to increase carpal tunnel flare-ups. In areas where you have no control over climate (such as work) consider using fingerless gloves to help keep warm.

If your C.T.S. is due to computer overuse ...

Pay attention to computer keyboard and mouse concerns.
All of the following ideas may help:

A) When using a keyboard, keep it slightly lower or at level with your elbow. Make sure your wrist is not bending up or down and that it's in a relaxed middle position.

B) The same principal (as above) applies when using your computer mouse. If needed consider using a gel or memory foam wrist support. Some people reduce the size of their mouse pad (by cutting it with a knife), which forces them to not move the mouse around as much. You can also reduce your mouse movements by changing your mouse settings on your PC.

C) If your C.T.S. is severe consider using voice recognition software - greatly reducing the need for a keyboard and mouse. This technology has improved significantly in recent years.

 When pain strikes.

A) During flare-ups, immediately take a break.
Pain is your body's way of telling you something - that is to take a break.

B) Use an ice pack or ice wrap during times of pain, as needed.

 Carpal preventative measures.

A) Use a good support product made for carpal tunnel syndrome or similar pain. Consider using such products as a wrist support, carpal tunnel splint, thermoskin glove, or a carpal tunnel support strap.

B) Take a short periodic break about every 15 minutes or so. Use this time to gently bend or stretch your hand and wrist area. This is especially important if you're using equipment that vibrates excessively.

C) If possible, try relaxing your grip of objects. Subconsciously, many carpal patients use too much unnecessary force when holding objects.

D) Alternate tasks. Not only will this keep you from being bored but prevents persistent strain on your hands.

 Can dietary supplements help?

Supplement and dietary considerations. Increase the consumption of the following foods and supplements to possibly help alleviate or prevent pain:

A) Use Bromelain daily to help reduce C.T.S. swelling, especially for chronic conditions. Allow a few weeks to see results. Pineapples are a good source of Bromelain.

B) Chondroitin and/or boswellia may help ease symptoms (take daily, as needed).

C) The herbal extract from cat's claw can be used to reduce inflammation.

D) Take Vitamin-B6 several times a day or eat foods rich in this vitamin- these include regular & sweet potatoes, all meats (except beef), brown rice, bananas, mangoes, barley and sunflower seeds. Allow 4-8 weeks to see an improvement. NOTE: Use along with Vitamin-B2 for better results.

E) Vitamin B12. Some studies show that 1,500mcg a day may help carpal tunnel syndrome.

A few final thoughts on carpal tunnel syndrome ...

A)
Women should understand they may be at higher risk of carpal tunnel syndrome. This may be due to hormonal fluctuations.

B) Treat other medical conditions which may contribute to carpal tunnel pain. Those with diabetes, arthritis, gout, hypothyroidism may already have less tolerance for C.T.S. Consider seeing your doctor to rule out underlying causes.
