How a cotton swab (or Q-tip) can help heal your canker sore. Several times a day dip a cotton swab in the following substances and apply it directly on the sore. These make your sore feel better and may possible contribute to healing:

A) Hydrogen peroxide (you may want to dilute this in an equal part of water). Available in most grocery and drug stores.

B) Milk of magnesia (or a similar competing product). Also available in most grocery and drug stores.

C) Aloe Vera extract. The liquid from this plant may work wonders when applied topically on canker sores.

E) Goldenseal salve (in liquid, gel or cream form) can alleviate pain when applied topically. The extracts (in capsule form, see to right) also work well- take these as needed for occasional canker sores, or daily to help prevent chronic flare-ups.

D) Licorice root. Use the liquid, gel, or cream version for topical treatment (this can also be consumed as an extract).

 Other helpful supplements & herbs.

These supplements & herbs can help minimize the occurrence or pain of canker sores.

A) Increase your intake of B-Complex, vitamin-B12, folic acid, thiamin, and the minerals iron and zinc (zinc lozenges may be more useful for this purpose). Take any as needed or daily.

B) For treatment, take black walnut hulls or black cohosh (Chinese folk remedy) as needed.

C) If you suspect your canker sores are stress-related consider taking 500mg of Lysine twice a day with meals.

Good & bad foods, and healthy eating habits.

Dietary considerations.
Keep in mind the following suggestions:

A) Try keeping a notebook, paying special attention to foods you ate just before canker sore pain set in. Discontinue use of any such foods.

B) Eat slowly, trying not to chew and swallow simultaneously. This helps prevent accidental biting of the inside of your mouth.

C) Prevent a canker sore from happening in the first place. Avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco, especially chewing tobacco. These make your mouth more vulnerable for developing canker sores.

D) Pay attention to the following foods to avoid or which are OK to use:

1) FOODS TO AVOID:

Foods & drinks that irritate your mouth include coffee and spices, all citrus fruits, chocolate, walnuts, and strawberries.

Also keep away from spicy and hot foods which may burn and sting a canker sore.

2) FOODS THAT MAY HELP:

Cranberry juice relieves canker sore pain and also acts as a healer. Drink it between meals.

Also eat plenty of foods rich in Vitamin-B, these include leafy green vegetables and whole grain foods.

New technology- the canker sore patch?

 About brushing your teeth.

When brushing your teeth, avoid over aggressive stroking of your toothbrush inside your mouth.
This may help promote or aggravate existing canker sores. In addition substitute your regular toothpaste with a natural toothpaste. Make sure it does not contain Sodium lauryl sulfate which may make it more likely you'll develop a mouth ulcer.

 A few final suggestions ...

A) Easier said than done, but try to take your mind off the pain.
Watch a comedy, go to the theatre and see a movie, or visit family/friends. The possibilities are endless.

B) Finally, to relieve pain apply an ice cube directly on the canker sore, or simply rinse your mouth with ice cold water. NOTE: This will NOT help the sore go away, but make it temporarily feel better.
