When bunions become a problem ...

Consider the following advice to help alleviate bunion pain, inflammation & discomfort:

1) The first step is to make sure any pressure is removed from the bunion.

2) Let time heal the bunion. Get rest - stay off your feet as much as possible until your condition improves.

3) For immediate flare-ups, elevate your feet above your heart level and apply an ice pack. Repeat several times a day for about 15 minutes at a time. If pain persists, see a professional.

4) Perform hydrotherapy to ease inflamed or painful bunions. That's just a fancy word for soaking your feet in warm or hot water. Mix in some ginger for added effect.

5) Use Aloe Vera gel topically to reduce redness and inflammation.

6) Use a bunion separator when you sleep at night, or any time you rest. These devices will separate your first and second toe.

Proper shoes & socks. They do make a difference.

Pay attention to shoe and sock concerns.
The following may help a bunion condition:

1) Go shoeless or consider wearing open-toe sandals.

2) Consider buying runners shoes. These specialty shoes are extremely lightweight (& soft) and frequently have extra space in the toe area, making them ideal not only for runners, but also for those suffering from bunions.

3) When buying shoes, take your time finding the right ones - a little effort goes a long way towards being comfortable.

4) Also avoid wearing tight socks - consider buying one sock size bigger than your foot.

5) Wearing high-heel shoes should be avoided at all cost.

6) Have a professional customize shoe inserts specifically for you or use splints as needed.

Don't forget to exercise your bunions.

Foot exercise is important but choose the right exercises.
While sitting, use marbles, round pebbles or a rolling pin and gently roll the bottom of your feet back and forth from heel to toe. Do this daily. If you feel a need to perform other regular exercises, try to choose an activity that puts less pressure on your feet such as swimming or doing sit-ups/stomach crunches. Use your imagination.

 Dietary considerations.

While food cannot fix your bunion, it can make it feel better and reduce inflammation.
To help, eat steamed and raw green veggies, red currants, citrus fruits and kiwis. All of them may reduce swelling. Meanwhile, foods containing hydrogenated oils and saturated fats (fried or greasy meaty foods) may worsen your symptoms.

What about dietary supplements? Do they work??

Use supplements to your favor. Add the following to your diet regimen to help keep bunion swelling and pain to a minimum:

A) Between meals, take Bromelain to help control inflammation.

B) Flaxseed oil also reduces swelling.

C) Take Magnesium several timesa day with meals.

D) Between meals take grape-seed extract, said to help reduce swelling.
