Preventative
measures. You can minimize back pain flare-ups by
observing the following:
A) Avoid heavy lifting. If you do have to lift, use a
back brace. In
addition you should lift so it puts less strain on your back - to
pick something up bend your knees & hips rather than bend your back.
In other words try to keep your back straight.
B) Avoid standing for too long. This will take a toll on your back.
Also avoid sitting down too long in the same position. If you don't
adjust your position every so often, your back may become stiff.
C) Being
sedentary may make your symptoms worse. Light non-straining exercise
should help your back pain long-term. Consider such exercises such
as swimming, cycling, rowing or walking.
D) Invest in a good comfortable
ergonomic chair. Office stores
usually have a great selection of these chairs and also offer many
good sales (check your Sunday newspaper circulars!). However don't
let cost be a factor in your choice - you can't put a price on
health! Try sitting down in each chair without looking at the price.
Then pick your favorite. The chair should support and cradle the
small of your back. It should have arm rests and not sit too low to
the ground - that could strain your back trying to get in and out of
the chair. Make sure the back of your knees do not touch the chair
and that your hips are supported. Avoid bucket seats or chairs that
are too soft.
When
back pain strikes ...
When back pain
strikes, take into considerations the following possibilities:
A)
Listen to your body. If your back pain is acting up, it's your
body's way of telling you something - Get some rest. You don't have
to lay in bed, but use common sense regarding your back's health.
B)
It's a good idea to always have an
ice pack or
ice wrap, or a
heat pack or
heat wrap ready for action. You can always substitute a ziplock bag full of ice but try not to apply ice directly on the
skin. You can also use a heated wet towel as a substitute.
C) For lower back pain, rub on
mustard seed oil for
instant relief.
D)
Use heated water to your advantage as frequently as possible. If
you have a jacuzzi, hot tub or sauna, use it! Or simply take
frequent warm/hot baths.
E)
Consider using the natural
Willow Bark herb as a substitute to
Aspirin.
F)
If back pain strikes quickly, immediately drink a few glasses of
water or a sports drink. Relief may come quickly as back pain is
frequently caused by being dehydrated.
Turn
your bed into a palace.
Make your sleeping
quarters friendly -
look for sales, take time to try all of the mattresses (or beds) out and pick the one that
is best for you. Consider replacing your mattress if it's sagging or
old. A good mattress should be fairly firm - if yours isn't, you can
place a board underneath for extra support. As for pillows, they should not be too big
below the neck. A
proper pillow
should hold your neck straight when you lay on your side and not be
too soft. Pillows naturally go soft over time, so it's a good idea
to replace them periodically. Consider a
knee pillow or a
body
pillow to lay against your back or front side- both can help prevent
back pain and make you sleep better. And when asleep try to avoid
sleeping on your stomach - sleeping on your side or back is OK.
